Wearing Thom Browne: Day 2

For Day 2 of a week of wearing Thom Browne I went to a "vintage" piece... this beautiful jacket gifted to me by a friend. With blues, blacks, and grays it creates a striking yet subtle pattern. As an expected TB touch, I love the grosgrain tipped collar, sleeves, and pocket.

By far one of the warmest pieces I own (thanks to an infusion of cashmere), I figured it'd be perfect for today's mixed temps.

Paired it with Docker's Alpha Khakis and a navy knit tie from The Knottery

Tomorrow's going in a little different direction, excited to show you what Browne creation I'll be sportin' then!

Vintage Plaid Blazer by Thom Browne: Things I Have

Anyone who knows me knows that I have been a long time fan of Thom Browne. I love to wear his cropped and shortened aesthetic, and my eye can catch his red/white/blue striped grosgrain tags a mile away.

I was recently gifted an extraordinary blazer by Mr. Browne... from so many collections ago, that I like to refer to it as 'vintage'.

The blazer is a cashmere/wool blend tipped on the collar and cuffs with (of course) a grosgrain finish. I love the muted color palette of the plaid, so perfect for Fall.

Inside it is lined with a striped silk and finished with the sewn-in Thom Browne label.

This blazer is now making the rest of my jackets jealous, as they know they've been usurped... it is really a prized piece and I'm so thrilled to be able to wear it!

Things I Want: Gitman Ties

I never have an occasion to wear ties anymore, but have been thinking that I want to start again. I'd actually asked my Dad if he still had any of the old knit ties, wool ties, ties with roosters on them that I remember as a child. Unfortunately he's given them away.

So in my quest for new neckwear I'd like to start with some great patterns + colors from Gitman! Check out this great one that I found on the Blackbird blog.

Gitman has released a ton of new styles and Blackbird has picked up a lot of them. Check out the rest here: http://helloblackbird.blogspot.com/2010/02/give-em-enough-thread-gitman-vintage.html

Things I Love: This is Not a Polo Shirt

This post should be titled "Reinvention" or "Vintage Inspiration". I've been thinking a lot lately about taking design inspiration from something in the past and repositioning it for today.

So it was really funny to discover that Band of Outsiders has done just that and in a really fun & contemporary way.

A few weeks ago I was reading GQ and came across this editorial about Band of Outsider's new "This is Not a Polo Shirt" collection. Modeled by James Franco's younger brother, I thought the various polo designs were really fun and poppy.

I was intrigued, and so I went to the Band of Outsiders website (http://band.bandofoutsiders.com). Imagine my surprise to see this picture of the label's designer, Scott Sternberg, from 1980. And wearing a yellow polo very similar to the one pictured above in GQ.

I love taking this sort of inspiration from your youth, or from a moment that so quintesentially typifies an era. I think I may have had the western styled shirt worn by the next boy over in that photo. Fun times!
