Tim Coppens Fall 2012: Just One Look

Last night I attended the Tim Coppens presentation -- his sophomore collection in what has been a well received and much talked about brand launch. In fact Coppens recently won the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation grant, further bolstering buzz about the line.

Clearly leveraging his background at both Adidas SLVR and Ralph Lauren RLX, there was an intricacy and use of detail that blew me away. Mixed textures, patterned seams, zipper detail -- the collection brought an edginess and restrained sophistication.

Since my photos would not do it justice, for now I'm sharing just one look. This amazing double-breasted trench, belted (naturally). Love the shoulder detail, the side flap and cinch, and the silver zippers.

Will definitely be sharing more on Tim Coppens, and I know you'll be hearing a lot more about him... stay tuned!

Shades of Grey Fall 2012: NYFW Review

Yesterday kicked off New York Fashion week for the Fall 2012 collections and first up for me was Shades of Grey by Micah Cohen. This is a line that I've written about before, and that I own some pieces from... it's a line without a lot of gimmick but with some solid tailoring, and infusion of trend.

To that point, as I walked in I noticed takes on the varsity jacket, a lot of quilting, and great corduroy. In what appears to be a common theme for Fall, there were a number of striped pieces (Justin Berkowitz at Details referred to them 'blanket stripes').

Not to start with my favorite look, but well... I really got into this corduroy vest and jacket. Of course it's navy, which was a draw, but also liked that the jacket is a little cropped. The sweatpants are cool, and add an interesting contrast to the whole look; but the top half is just right for a day outing or a few meetings.

In what was a fairly staid palette (it is Fall after all), I liked the inclusion of these rust colored pants.

Always a fan of a marled crewneck, and this was no exception. The wool flannel blazer of it had an equally soft hue, which made it feel like a great Summer to early Fall transition piece.

Overall a well thought out and easy to wear collection. More photos to come, and an inclusion of some of the quilted pieces, which I thought were fantastic. Stay tuned for more NYFW news!

Fall 2012 from Sacai: Things I Love

I've been following Japanese label Sacai for a few seasons now -- although designer Chitose Abe launched her menswear line in 2009. But since discovering it, I have been consistently impressed with the attention to detail and the innovative knits, for which she is known.

WAD magazine recently did an exploration of a few growing Japanese brands (more on that soon!) and Sacai was one of them -- with a brief but insightful interview with Abe. Interesting to me was her response that her designs are indebted to her living in Tokyo but that she doesn't "necessarily draw a line between Tokyo and the rest of the world."

After reading the WAD piece I realized I hadn't yet seen images of the F/W '12 collection, and so quickly located them, and found it to be true to form.

Having noticed the use of white buttons and striped coats in S/S '12, it continued into Fall, with great result.

I really enjoyed these patterned pants that have a great sheen but are structured enough to wear as a normal trouser (and be paired here with some double monks).

Always a sucker for chunky knitwear, this piece stood out. Again the white buttons (love that contrast) and a play on a double-breasted design, with various knit patterns featured.

I highly suggest you keep an eye on Sacai, and that you check out the rest of the Fall images at Fucking Young.

Suits from Ana Locking: Things I Love

I've been following label Ana Locking for a while and was excited by their Fall '12 collection. And no, not because they featured Clement Chabernaud (well, maybe a little).

I am always attracted to color and pattern, and they did a great job here of blending it with classic pieces and a buttoned up "gentlemanly" aesthetic.

There's great tailoring, and I'm really into the three piece suits, especially the red plaid shown below. Of course the pops of yellow are also a draw, and I think an interesting color selection to bring into Fall.

Overall a concise collection that stays true to it's theme... and I'm going to keep my eyes out for that red suit (and raffia wrapped briefcase!). More info via Hypebeast...

Belted Vest from wooyoungmi: Things I Want

This morning I took a look through the images from the wooyungmi Fall 2012 collection and immediately gravitated towards this belted vest.

I really liked how slim it is at the top, then has the larger outer pockets at the bottom. Styled with a wider leg pant also pulls it all together (and is such a trend for Fall).

I'm not normally one for vests (be they sweater or otherwise), but this is a look I could definitely rock come Fall.

On a side note, there's been a lot of chatter lately about the large scarf trend for men, and I thought it was really well executed here... again, a look I want to try!

Padded Jacket from NUMBER:Lab: Things I Have

Recently I wrote about my three favorite pieces from Capsule, of which one was an incredible jacket from NUMBER:Lab. So it was only natural that when I heard about their sample sale last weekend, I knew I had to stop by.

Actually I've been passing their new store on 10th Avenue every day on my way to work, and needed to go check out the space... so this was the perfect opportunity!

The brand does a great job of creating items you can wear every day, but that have an outdoor technical side. Their site very accurately calls it "tech + tailored".

At the sale I tried on a padded vest, which I loved. When the salesperson told me it came with sleeves (aka was a jacket with removable sleeves), I was sold. I loved the crop fit, the super warm double lining, and the double collar.

Wore the jacket out Saturday night, to great reviews, and again on Sunday... it's quickly becoming a staple in my closet and I'm so happy I grabbed it!

Tie from Uniform Experiment: Things I Want

I just came across these ties from Japanese brand uniform experiment and love them! The two-toned contrast is awesome and would definitely stand out when worn. I also dig the logo action "UE" on the bottom.

The black and darker blue version is my favorite, will definitely look to pick one of these up.

Gant Rugger "Nouveau Prep": Things I Love

I haven't been shy about my admiration for Gant Rugger and what designer Christopher Bastin has done for the line. I'm a huge fan, both for the collection itself as well as the overall styling and in-store experience.

For Spring '12 they've gone with "Nouveau Prep" and when I first saw the looks last week I couldn't stop scrolling through it... the pieces were definitely in the prepster category, but with a spin on the detailing that causes Rugger to stand out.

The light color palette in this look really got me into the Spring mood -- the canvas blazer over the cream colored crewneck, with a navy striped tie that stands out just a bit.

Another top look was this gingham shirt in red paired with a gingham jacket in blue (I love a pattern x pattern scenario), which goes so well together when done with the solid green pants.

Something about this blazer (the buttons? the color?) called to me. Keeping it simple with a white shirt and striped tie, this was probably my favorite look in the whole book. Casually preptastic.

You're going to want to check out the rest of the collection for yourself. And if you head there right now you *might* see some F/W pieces that are drastically reduced... and you *might* walk away with some of those too!

Striped Blazer from Dries van Noten: Things I Want

With the strangely warm weather this week in NYC, I've started thinking more and more about Spring... and it doesn't help when new deliveries are coming into my favorite retailers. Thom Browne has some great Spring pieces out (don't worry, more to come on that), as does Gant Rugger.

But while perusing Tres Bien Shop I came across this fantastic blazer from Dries van Noten. I'm a sucker for color, and for stripes and this will contrast so nicely with a crisp white shirt. I like that the jacket is in cotton and unlined, it'll be perfect for a warm day.

A little closer look at what I consider to be signature Dries design with the stripes, the aubergine mixed with blues, and the nice sheen... it's a great piece!

Maison Kitsune Fall 2012: Things I Love

I'm still in the process of re-reviewing all of the European men's shows over the past weeks... and wanted to give a shout to personal fav Maison Kitsune. They consistently deliver well done collections, with a subtle French twist, and Fall 2012 was no exception.

Only this time they hooked me even more because their theme was a "chic man riding his bicycle in the city...". As an avid cyclist I've been loving the surge around brands like Rapha; Kitsune's use of particular fabrics and construction to enable sartorial cyclists gets my endorsement.

A few key favorites were the collared sweater in a bright red, the patterned scarf (BPMW just wrote this morning on the large scarf trend), great layering with a buttoned down club collar... and my must have, the "Parisien" cap.

As I've written here before, I'll now anxiously wait for the famous Kitsune video lookbook, mashing up models hurriedly dressing in the collection with songs produced by Kitsune musical label artists.

Jacket from W-D: Things I Want

I'm still getting caught up from reviewing all of the great coverage the past two weeks, through Florence, Milan, and Paris shows. There was a standout post from We Are The Market on an Italian brand I hadn't heard of before... W-D (or Well Dressed Man).

Created by Salvatore Battello as "a capsule collection of men's jackets borrowed directly from British sartorial tradition" the line uses mostly British fabrics but with a "Made in Italy design" principles.

I was really taken with most of the pieces (there are only six for Fall 2012) -- mostly around the color palette and the patterns, which made the jackets distinctive from what else is available.

The first one below is my absolute favorite...

Now I need to find out where these beauties will be distributed come Fall! Until then check out the website for the full collection...

Givenchy Fall 2012: Things I Love

My favorite show out of Paris so far has been Givenchy. Granted, Thom Browne hasn't shown yet... but I had to give a shout to Riccardo Tisci for the amazing work he's done at the house in general, but specifically with men's. It is not a collection that skews towards my personal aesthetic but I totally appreciate what he's doing and do want to give it a try!

As with Spring he shows a consistent threading of themes, staying on point with the general nuances he's introduced (skirts, leggings, printed tops) while tackling more subtlety for Fall '12 (no birds of paradise here).

Going through the collection I really fell for the more monochromatic looks and pulled out a few of my favorites to highlight below.

I really loved this coat and can't wait to see (and touch) it in person.

Something so nice and clean about this black shirt + pants, but with that striped belt holding it all together.

This leather top is fantastic! Again there are common tones in the whole look, which I didn't mind given the change in material and hue.

Red on red on red on... for someone like myself who appreciates a bold color statement, this is it!

Burberry Prorsum F/W 2012: Things I Love

The Burberry Prorsum Fall '12 show occurred a few days ago, but I can't get it out of my head! Christopher Bailey and team outdid themselves with an incredibly strong collection that uses the brand's strengths (coats and suiting) and complements it with some whimsy in the form of patterned knits and colorful accessories.

I love it all. So it took a lot of editing to select my favorite looks, but here they are...

Slightly obsessed with this sweater -- the horizontal stripes up top, and the differently colored solid below.

Another outstanding knit for those of us who like color and a little bit of fun... and I really like the loose neckline. This is top of my list come Fall (I'll leave the matching bag at home...)!

The quilting on the body of the jacket stood out and the color is so rich, it caught my eye, especially when styled with another loosely worn sweater underneath.

The slim tailoring on this jacket is perfect for guys like me! I'm totally in on this whole look -- most especially that incredible bag he is carrying. Definitely more of a Fall ensemble, but one that I can get behind.

A Peek At Capsule Show: My Three Favorite Pieces

Last night before they closed for the day, I tucked into Capsule Show, the fantastic trade show run by the folks at BPMW Agency. It's been growing each year, with more and more brands, and a bigger presence... and this week it's all about menswear!

There were a lot of great pieces from folks like Ovadia & Sons (fell in love with a yellow waffle knit sweater), Won Hundred (clean Scandinavian aesthetic), Vanishing Elephant, and Fahlgren (Brett Fahlgren's new neckwear line).

But oddly my top three favorites were all outerwear.

First was this amazing wool coat from NUMBER:Lab. Really enjoyed the deep color, the sophistication of the overall design, and the blending of a 'technical' touch with the clasps. The hood is tipped in leather, and there is great construction throughout. Couldn't stop looking at this coat!

My second favorite was from Mark McNairy New Amsterdam. I'm not alone in my reverence for what McNairy's been doing lately and there were some great pieces in his Fall collection.

But this jacket (in three colors) just stood out. First the boldness of the color really caught my eye. Then the fabric was incredible -- honestly felt like a softened Kevlar. Stiff yet pliable, with a little edge to it. Must get one of these jackets for Fall 2012.

The third was from a brand I was not familiar with... Loyal. They had a lot of wool coats, but of course the one in bright blue caught my eye. When I saw the anchors painted in white, I was sold (I'm nothing if not predictable). Great cropped pea coat but the color and nautical theme breaks it out of the pack.

Double Breasted Blazer from Isaia: Things I Want

Sadly, I'm not able to be in Florence this week for Pitti Uomo... one year I'll get there though! So instead I've been living vicariously through the various editors, bloggers, photographers who are there.

A lot of posts, tweets, and instagrams to wade through -- it's honestly a lot to digest, even from 3000 miles away! But from everything I've seen so far, there is one piece that knocked me off my chair and is a MUST HAVE for next Fall.

The ever dapper (and unerring eye) Nick Wooster posted this photo from the Isaia booth. It's not just that I keep collecting double breasted blazers... I also love this color, such a great transition from Summer into early Fall. And the texture is what really sold me -- the chunky nubbiness is incredible.

Dolce & Gabbana Summer Campaign: Things I Love

I've mentioned before that I'm not a huge fan of Dolce & Gabbana and have never really found myself drawn to their collections. But the thing I will say is that their ad campaigns always rock. Great models, great stories, always really well done.

For Summer 2012 they not only used one of my favorite models (yes, yes... Arthur Kulkov) but they had some really well styled suits, fantastic specs, and some color (see jacket below) and whimsy.

The whole set was good, but my selected favorites are below... starting with Mr. Kulkov.

Oxford Shirts from Uniqlo: Things I Love

I've been a big fan of Uniqlo well before they hit Stateside... when I worked in Asia I started (and still do) get most of my denim there. They're great for basics in fun colors, and the Japanese slim tailoring is perfect for me.

Recently I had an emergency for a white shirt and bought a Uniqlo oxford. And I loved it! It fit me so well, was easy to wear, and totally flexible to dress up or down. Paired the white one with my new AMI sweater, which was a big hit.

I've since gone back and bought it in 3 of the 5 colors they offer (two shown here). My younger brother commented on how much he liked mine, so he got one too.

While they now have three stores in NYC (one dangerously close to where I live), that's it for their U.S. retail presence, and they currently don't offer e-com in the States. So for now, just go to their site and drool (or ask me to pick something up for you!).

Saddle Shoes from Walk-Over: Things I Have

I recently wrote about the rockin' Zachary boot from Walk-Over shoes, and before the holidays got quite a few wears in... but as I headed to California last week to see family, I brought along another pair they had kindly sent, the Walk-Over saddle shoe.

Been wanting saddle shoes for a while -- a very classic piece that has been on a resurgence. I gave them a whirl in the 'burbs of San Francisco and found them to be super comfortable...and super stylish.

I'm all about the color contrast, and the texture contrast between the suede and leather. Both help the shoe stand out, without taking over the look.

Here I styled them with a Thom Browne shirt, Black Fleece cardigan, and Uniqlo denim.

Of course in a very comfortable 50 degree California winter, I started out going sockless... so easy to wear with jeans for a casual day out.

But then I tried on a pair of Happy Socks for a little kick...

Cable Crewneck from Ami: Things I Have

While in San Francisco this week I did a little post-holiday perusal at Barney's. Without intending to (isn't that always the case), I walked away with a few things... one of which was this great cableknit sweater from French label Ami.

I'd been at the Ami launch at Barney's in NYC and had been impressed with the collection. This sweater fits perfectly, the sleeves are a little long (which is perfect for winter wear), and it is super soft. I haven't taken it off since I bought it.

Jimmy Choo Boots for Spring: Things I Want

I've been keeping my eye on the Jimmy Choo men's collections since they launched last year... there have been some fun styles (although Choo & Loub are starting to cross over a bit in the men's space).

But this morning the Spring 2012 offering jumped off the page at me -- brightly colored boots, and of course anything in yellow goes right on my want list!

Specs from Eyebobs: Things I Want

Ever since Nick Wooster included them as part of his holiday gift guide, I haven't been able to get these specs from eyebobs out of my head!

Founded in 2001 the company offers a huge array of frames for men and women... but after looking through them all, I still loved the same pair that Wooster had selected (I mean, his eye is famous for a reason!).

Really like the thick rims, the marbling of the color, and the relatively small nature of the overall frame. Definitely think these will be on my 2012 want list!

Behind The Scenes: Loden Dager

As a follower of menswear there are two things that never fail to excite: seeing a collection on a runway and meeting with a designer in their studio.

The former is pretty obvious -- there is the music, the crowd, and seeing the pieces as the designer envisioned and styled it. The latter is the most unique opportunity to have a one-on-one conversation about the line, but also to see the environment that drives their work... fabric swatches, sketches, samples.

So when I had the invitation to meet with Loden Dager designer Paul Marlow in the brand's studio, I didn't hesitate to accept. I'm a longtime fan -- smart tailoring, unique detail + function, and a well balanced infusion of color and prints.

Sitting in the studio, surrounded by the aforementioned swatches, buttons, and Fall 2012 samples (my lips are sealed), I got to dive into what the brand is up to, and where they're headed.

The customer: "They want consistency", Marlow explained. Taking key silhouettes each season and changing the fabric or the details gives men reassurance the pieces will always fit as they expect, but keeps their look updated and fresh.

The collection: "I started making the pieces I'd want to wear...", but as the brand matures it seems important to Marlow that while everyone may not identify with each piece, the entire collection fits what his customer is looking for.

The production: "It makes it really easy having most of the collection produced seven blocks away", allowing for tweaks and modifications that would otherwise take a plane ride or a month of e-mail. Certain items are done in Los Angeles, Peru, Portugal based on the core production strength of those regions.

The show: "It really takes you away from everything", commenting on the subterranean venue where they've been holding their runway spectaculars (including personal fav Clement Chabernaud).

What's next: All I can say is... it's exciting. From what Marlow described about his plans for Fall 2012, as well as some expanding categories they are looking at, there is definite growth and excitement coming from the Loden Dager camp.

Zachary Boot from Walk-Over: Things I Have

I may be coming a little late to the boot game, but I've been looking around for a good pair and definitely had some viable candidates (like these!)...

When the folks at Walk-Over shoes (remember these beauties) offered to send me a pair of their Zachary boot, I jumped at the chance.

Just from the photos online I liked the look -- it has wingtip design elements that to me adds sophistication but doesn't detract from the overall intention of the boot, and makes it a great city shoe.

I gave them a try at home and not only were they super comfortable, they started to work in nicely on the first go... given how much I romp around the city, day-long wearability is important!

Here I put them with some Thom Browne moleskine pants (and pink argyle socks) but last night I wore them with jeans, for an equally great effect. An easy entry into my wardrobe rotation!

Have already been receiving looks and compliments and can't wait to keep wearin' the Zachary boot throughout winter. Check them out on the Walk-Over site...

Pleated Trouser from Gant Rugger: Things I Have

I've had my eye on this pair of trousers from Gant Rugger ever since they released for Fall. But every time I was either in the Rugger store or at Barney's, they were always sold out of my size.

So I was pretty excited this week when I popped into Barney's Beverly Hills and they had them! Grabbed them and ran...

It's a great lightweight trouser, with a mild pleat. Very slim tailoring and I love the fit.

Green Corduroy Tie from Unis: Things I Have

I landed in L.A. this afternoon and made a beeline to the new UNIS store on La Brea. Sure, I'm very familiar with their store in NYC but being both a retail and menswear junkie, I wanted to see what they'd crafted on the West Coast.

Maybe it was the Southern California sun streaming in the front window, or the exposed beams and sparse furnishings... but something about the space just clicked and I found it incredibly well done.

While there I picked up the latest Inventory, a Le Labo candle, and this really great green corduroy tie.

Their selection of ties came in a variety of colors, and I've been on the hunt for a solid tie to replace the Tom Ford one I left on the 1 train (a very long story)...

Spring 2012 Preview: Tallia Orange

Last week I stopped by the Tallia Orange showroom, to see their Spring '12 collection. Created as the private label of menswear manufacturer Peerless Clothing, Tallia (the orange mannequins speak the color story for themselves) is about basics with a twist. Patterned collars, small details, printed jacket linings, there are a myriad of ways the brand delivers some unexpected fun.

Below are a few of my favorite pieces -- I really liked colorful coats (no surprise there!). The red gingham (which also came in blue), was very lightweight and unconstructed, making it a really flexible piece for summer days at the office, at a picnic, or both. The red two button blazer was super sharp, with slim tailoring. And there was the really awesome double-breasted linen suit. The contrasting white buttons made that jacket stand out!

Spring also had some great washed paisley jackets, and a nice offering of basic suits. Check out their site to find out where you can buy, and get some color in your closet next season!

Tommy Hilfiger 2011 Holiday Video: Things I Love

Last year Tommy Hilfiger launched a holiday campaign centered around a (quite large) family named The Hilfigers. There were the patriarch and matriarch, a smattering of members in their 20's, a few kids, and a dog.

The campaign started with a clever commercial involving a picnic and some canine-induced disaster. It was catchy, but what really impressed me was how omnipresent the campaign was... you saw it in print, at retail, and every Tommy touchpoint. That family was everywhere!

Since then there've been quite resort and spring ads, and now they've released holiday for 2011. And I have to say, I love it!

Again utilizing all of the family members, humor, and remaining very true to the Hilfiger brand identity. It's modern prep and it works!

Not sure I'd dance shirtless in my family 's living room... but that aside, great job!

Striped Pendleton Blanket: Things I Have

Yesterday I made my first foray into the San Francisco location of Unionmade Goods. They stock a huge selection of apparel, footwear, accessories: Levi's Made & Crafted, Alden, Unis, Folk, Aesop there is a long list of quality (and quite often made in the U.S.) goods on offer.

While there were quite a few items that caught my eye (these Made & Crafted chinos with the wooden buttons?!), I couldn't resist this fantastic wool blanket from Pendleton. I loved the stripes and the color palette, but also loved how thick and warm it will be when the weather in NYC turns to full-on winter blast.

You'll see on top of the blanket I also picked up the latest Free & Easy, one of my favorite Japanese menswear magazines. I've been missing Tokyo, and missing my days of flying through Narita and loading up on 30 lbs. of fashion goodness.

Leather Briefcase Options: My Brother's Shopping List

This week my brother asked me for some suggestions on a briefcase. He wanted something that looked nice for work, that was classic and could be used for a while, and that was reasonably priced.

I definitely have my favorites when it comes to leather goods... but in the spirit of meeting his criteria I've come back with what I think are three great options.

1. First up is a favorite brand of mine, Billykirk. Made in the U.S., they do great collections each season and are gaining quite a following. I really liked the simplicity of the Billykirk Schoolboy Satchel that I found on Bonobos, definitely a classic look.

2. I went to my go-to retailer's website to see what they had. While there were some bags that I loved, they weren't all suited for my brother. But this Marc by Marc Jacobs bag caught my eye. I liked the various textures of the leather, the front pocket, and the simple clasp. Available at Barney's.

3. Next I went to J. Crew, because I know they not only have a well edited men's mix, at a great price, but they also bring in other brands to round out their offerings. In this case, their own Montague Leather Satchel seemed like a nice fit for my brother.

Some good options to be sure, and hopefully one of them will soon be in my brother's hand!

Wingtips from Walk-Over Shoes: Things I Have

I've been on the hunt for a new pair of wingtips and have to say that I became slightly obsessed with this pair on the Walk-Over website. So when they kindly offered to send me a pair, I definitely agreed!

I wore them last night for the first time and not only are they super comfortable, I love the detailing and the stitching They also have a significant heel, and give me some lift! I don't own much black, but really like the color of these and am excited to incorporate them into my winter wardrobe.

At last night's event I had multiple requests for photos of my shoes, so they're obviously going to get some attention!

Recently I needed a tie last minute before an event... so I ran over to Jeffrey's (thankful it is close to my office) and checked out their selection. I had a really cool Band of Outsiders tie in hand, until the sales person pulled this one off the rack...

I loved the very traditional blue and green stripes, with the gold outline. It was exactly what I needed, I grabbed it, and ran!

Just wore it to an event tonight and thought it worked quite nicely.

Sweater with Leather Sleeves from Givenchy: Things I Want

This may be a little off the reservation for some of you, and perhaps I'm drawn to it because of my interest in Riccardo Tisci and the fantastic stuff he's been doing at Givenchy...

But whatever it is, I'm all about this crewneck sweater with leather sleeves. I like the relative simplicity of the body, in wool, with the contrast coming from the sleeve. And not just the different material, but the length of the sleeve helps it stand out (between you and me, the proportion of the sleeve was a selling point).

Once the weather actually drops to wear you can wear this, I say jump on it!

I've been talking for a while about needing some boots (I mean, it's about to be my first NYC winter!). Been looking at the Julius boot from Peter Nappi, and then my friend Jeff suggested the Alden Indy... both amazing options.

Today though I came across the Maine Guide Strap Boot from Yuketen. I love the color, the height, the construction, the stitching... but really, I was sold with the strap (it's always the details, eh?).

From a Japanese designer who has the boots hand-sewn in Canada by indigenous craftsmen. Local artisan manufacturing meets Japan? What else do you need.

Last week was the Thom Browne sample sale. Of course this gives a brand fan like me chills... and has me start plotting how I am going to get there, find some amazing buys, and leave as quickly as possible. Think about the show Supermarket Sweep...

Anyway, I made a stop after work on Friday, by which point most things were gone. However I did pick up a couple of great shirts, some shoes (more on that to come), and an amazing seersucker suit.

When I tried on the coat at the sale, it fit me perfectly and I was so excited. Utilizing Thom Browne's usual red, white, blue stripe it is light and perfect for warm weather. I cannot wait for Spring to come, so I can wear this out!

The inside pocket, lists the size as "Sample". And the buttons came in this really cute manila envelope with a "TB" label on it.

As soon as I got home I tried it one, and it all fit like a glove. I am ready to go!

Realizing I already wrote this week about a Thom Browne blazer I received, and knowing that the Thom Browne sample sale is currently happening in New York, and that yesterday I saw my friend Richard and he was wearing all Thom Browne...

But this morning BG's men's homepage had a Thom Browne takeover and so I couldn't resist talking about this item I've been coveting for Fall. The Bergdorf's men's store has had these burgundy moleskine pants and every time I go in I ask if they have them in my size. And every time, alas, I'm told they don't.

Even on the BG site they don't have my size, so I think next week I'll have to take a trip to the TB mecca, 100 Hudson, and pick them up there. These are an essential for my Fall/Winter wardrobe!

Hand Made Leopard Bowtie: Things I Have

Okay, just kidding... in fact this fantastic bow is another gift from my aunt, who hand makes ties for me. I just received it and cannot find the right occasion to wear! So fun and wild, I think it'd go great for a black tie event, or with jeans and boots.

And I have to admit the leopard is giving me some hints of Givenchy Men, which is never a bad thing.

Vintage Plaid Blazer by Thom Browne: Things I Have

Anyone who knows me knows that I have been a long time fan of Thom Browne. I love to wear his cropped and shortened aesthetic, and my eye can catch his red/white/blue striped grosgrain tags a mile away.

I was recently gifted an extraordinary blazer by Mr. Browne... from so many collections ago, that I like to refer to it as 'vintage'.

The blazer is a cashmere/wool blend tipped on the collar and cuffs with (of course) a grosgrain finish. I love the muted color palette of the plaid, so perfect for Fall.

Inside it is lined with a striped silk and finished with the sewn-in Thom Browne label.

This blazer is now making the rest of my jackets jealous, as they know they've been usurped... it is really a prized piece and I'm so thrilled to be able to wear it!

Crop, No Roll: Docker's Spring 2012 Preview

On a rainy night last week, I went to see the Docker's Spring Preview for 2012. It's always fun to look at while I'll be wearing during a sunny season, while it's cold and windy outside.

I've been on the Docker's bandwagon for a while now, they've been getting great traction and brand development. And I really dig their recently launched Alpha khaki. So it was nice to see they're continuing some on-trend fashion elements for Spring... of course a camo moment and some really cool slim and cropped pants (since I recently used my new favorite term: "Crop, No Roll").

Looking forward to picking up some of these rockin' pants come Spring!

A Series on Leather Craftsmen: Lotuff & Clegg

I was recently fortunate enough to be sitting with Joe Lotuff, of the leather goods company Lotuff & Clegg, for what was an all too brief 45 minutes (the brevity was my fault).

In that time though I learned so much about the New England brand, that Joe's passion for the craftsmanship and product definitely rubbed off. We discussed the way in which the cow hide is inspected for quality, how Lotuff & Clegg looks to use large swatches of leather versus stitching together two smaller ones, and how the rounded edge finishing is done by hand (no small feat) by a leather artisan. I also learned about how the leather is treated, without the use of chromium, to create the right texture and patina. While this takes additional time, it is something that Joe felt was part of the brand's integrity.

The design of each piece, and how that design may evolve, was another fascinating point of discussion. Lotuff & Clegg focuses on the functionality of each product, and design oriented additions should enhance that function. This was evidenced in the extra long zipper on a duffle bag, which allows for the bag to be fully opened. Joe also shared that through customer feedback they are able to make adjustments to a design, improving both its function and appeal.

While the conversation focused on the brand in general, there was also this beautiful brand new leather briefcase in front of me, which required a lot of inspection! It was the Leather Lock Briefcase, in black, and I have to say I fell in love. It was so evident that all of the elements Joe had discussed: craftsmanship, detailing, design were all there.

While in L.A. the past week I did some shopping (hello, Filson bag). One thing I saw and could not resist was this plaid shetland wool tie by Thom Browne.

I loved the red/white/blue plaid (not surprising from TB) but also the texture and chunkiness of the wool. It'll be perfect to wear as Fall approaches and the temperatures drop.

I've been getting so many compliments (and photos by Tommy Ton!) on my leather bag from WANT, but with the weather changing I wanted something that could better withstand rain or snow.

When I was recently in Atlanta and peered through the window of Sid Mashburn I saw a huge (and glorious) pile of Filson bags, of all sizes, and knew that's what I wanted.

Orri Henrisson for Spring 2012: Things I Love

Australian brand Orri Henrisson has been on my radar for a while. Doing very wearable and approachable menswear, with a colorful and inventive twist, their collection for Spring/Summer 2012 delivers on the same.

I really like the colored patches infused in shirts, jackets, and pants -- adding some great blocking and contrast to the pieces. I am also really into the leather patches on pants, giving it an equestrian feel. And in my favorite look below, the nubby dark pants (in what looks like a moleskine?) with the red contrast zippers...

Following my interview with San Francisco based leather craftsman Gad Tal, I recently had the opportunity to speak with Nashville based leather goods brand Peter Nappi. I'll admit I have been salivating over their Julius boot for a while, so the chance to speak to the man behind the brand, was definitely a pleasure.

Launched by Phillip Nappi, the grandson of Peter, the story behind the brand and its Italian heritage is one that will have everyone believing in fate (read below). The story behind their Nashville studio, and the incredible level of quality and detail behind their work, is one that will have you believing in the resurgence of craftsmen and how you can purchase goods that will last a lifetime (continue reading below!).

Based in a rebuilt studio space that had been Nashville's Neuhoff Meatpacking Plant, the Peter Nappi team not only produces handcrafted beautiful products, but has engaged with local musicians, artists, and chefs to connect with the community and those who share a similar passion for artisanry and craftmanship.

5 Questions with Phillip Nappi:

MR: What inspired you to "relaunch" the Peter Nappi brand?
PN: It all boils down to a passion for boots I had shared unknowingly with my grandfather, the founder of the original Peter Nappi. I've always dreamed of having a shoe store with old, great leather couches, a cappuccino machine and incredible music playing in the background. I was inspired to turn my dream into a mission when my favorite pair of work boots finally wore out beyond repair. I had worn them everyday for years to the point that they were molded to fit my foot as if they were made for me. It was like losing a great love and I couldn't find anything to replace them that could offer its perfected fit from the beginning. So I started sketching out some ideas, ripping out pictures, and piecing together all of my favorite aspects into one model. It became an obsession. But if we were really going to do this we had to be all-in. So my wife and I quit our jobs, boarded our dogs and moved to Italy to make the perfect boot. Everyone thought we were nuts.
It wasn’t until about six months into this venture that our fate was sealed. While in Italy, I found out my grandfather, Peter Nappi, whom I had never met, was a shoemaker from Vietri, Italy. It was as if all of this was predestined, uncovered piece by piece to seem like it was my own idea, when really it was a part of who I was all along. This is my heritage, I am just happy to be able to carry it on.

MR: What is the basis for your designs?
PN: Quality takes precedent. We spend equal time choosing the leather as we do designing and crafting our boots. Only the finest, most supple leathers will do. Then we focus on simple, time-honored designs that last. We believe your footwear should be a staple so we design ours to be both timeless and have the quality to last a lifetime.

MR: Is there a specific training or apprenticeship program for your artisans?
PN: We work with an incredible group of people in Italy. The man that helps bring our designs to fruition actually teaches the art of shoemaking to students in town (Monsumanno Terme, outside Firenze). He is so passionate about sharing the talents and skills of past generations and passing them on to the next reign. The family that owns the factory where our shoes are made has worked there since the 60s. The owner, now 78, and his wife still come in everyday. He's actually been making shoes for one of the most famous Italian fashion houses since he was only eleven years old. He's about to hand over operations to his daughter who's probably been there since birth. The head foreman, lovingly called "iL Mastreo" (the Master) has worked there 32 years - and he's only 50 years old. Shoemaking is in their blood— that more than anything trumps their training. They are truly incredible people and we are lucky to work with them.

MR: Are there any new materials or techniques you're looking to use moving forward?
PN: I've been experimenting with finishing techniques. One of the best things about our shoes is that they only get better with age. The leather is such that through wear, they actually become more beautiful—like life is evolving them into an extension of the owner. Some of these finishing techniques will bring out hidden qualities that would take months or years to see. Although the journey is half the fun, these effects on the leather give the boots the appearance that they have a life and a story to tell coming straight out of the box.

MR: Where do you see Peter Nappi going from here?
PN: We have some great women's models coming soon. Heels, boots, open toe, laced shoes. All with our signature quality and timeless style. We've also been working on leather jackets. We want "Peter Nappi" to be a lifestyle. A way to live—not just in the products we sell but in the principles we believe in, which inspire the way we work and produce our goods.
There are just so many options! We are thrilled to be given such an incredible opportunity to revive and continue a great man's calling.

I can always go for a new pair of sneakers, and this pair released as a collab between Dr. Romanelli x Converse are pretty cool. Nautical theme -- check. Anchors -- check. Mid-top with red-striped ankle -- check.

Now as far as collabs go, this one is pretty complex. It's called Beetle vs. Popeye, because the other shoe in the line is a fatigues inspired "Beetle Bailey". Of course I'm siding with Popeye...

Lady Gaga Tee from Artisanal Ansatz: Things I Want

From that source of so much that is cool, Hypebeast, I got hooked on these celebrity driven tees. Created by an art collective in Belgium, the tees feature fashion, music, film personalities... but the drawings were all done with ballpoint pen.

The collective, Artisanal Ansatz, has created drawings of David Bowie, to Snoop Dogg, to Karl Lagerfeld (naturally). Given I already own a Brazilian made voodoo doll of Karl I decided the Coke can-in hair-on the phone Gaga was my favorite...

Beckett Specs from Warby Parker: Things I Have

Last week I had the privilege of visiting the Warby Parker HQ in NYC, and see their current collection and some upcoming releases. It was a fantastic visit, the whole team was fantastic, and I was finally able to get a new pair of specs (something I've been wanting for a while).

Today in the mail came my Beckett in Black Matte, and I am so excited! They're a great shape, and I really like the matte finish.

If you're not familiar with the Warby Parker concept, they not only offer you great frames that are all very well priced (umm, just $95 with lenses!) and for each pair you buy they donate a pair to someone in need. It is truly a win-win model and I'm thrilled to start rockin' my new specs!

Wool Coat from A.P.C.: Things I Have

Last weekend a rainy Saturday had me seeking refuge at Barney's... as soon as I stepped onto the fifth floor I saw this amazing wool coat by A.P.C.

Tried it on, and it fit perfectly... I've been looking around for a winter coat, and since I seemingly only buy navy (side note, every single thing I purchased on Saturday was navy), I felt it'd work well.

I also loved the leather insets on the shoulders. Gives the coat such a different look.

With the release of images from Lanvin's Men's Spring 2012 accessories, I definitely found something I want. I've been a fan of Lucas Ossendrijver since he started at the label, and the accessories offering doesn't disappoint.

My favorite was this great bag, with a mix of prints (reminds me a bit of the camo/navajo portfolio from Trussardi) and a casual feel with the nylon and backpack type closures.

Really like the top handle and the front pouch... and this will be on the top of my list come Spring!

Today I came across a label I wasn't familiar with... agi & sam, created by Agape Mdumulla and Sam Cotton. Having worked for designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander McQueen, and Carolyn Massey, the duo have released images for their third collection, entitled "Tabasco, Tequila, and Tomato Juice".

It is definitely a print heavy, bold collection with a very artistic approach. Given my adoration of anything bright and printed, I took to some of the pants, as well as the yellow coat shown below.

Currently without U.S. distribution (although I could definitely see this line at Opening Ceremony), I will be keeping an eye out for future work from agi & sam.

Menswear for Friends: AMI Launches at Barney's

It is always fun when you are one of the first to see a collection at retail... not only touch the fabric and see the detail, but also experience the merchandising and display. So, I was excited to be invited to do just that this week at Barney's, for French menswear label AMI.

I had previously written about AMI and their inaugural collection for Fall 2011, and it was great to see the pieces in person! They have a window right now at the NY flagship, as well as a significant in-store display.

In my conversation with designer Alexandre Mattiusi, he reiterated how the line is filling the void he and his friends felt in the existing menswear offerings. By literally calling the label 'friend' he makes it clear that "my friends are my inspiration" and that when designing he "makes sure I can wear it".

"I want to be the first customer", Mattiusi relays, and the easy yet well fitting pieces evoke just that. I particularly liked the sweaters, and was also very interested by the camel coat.

When asked what we can expect for Spring the designer shared that his outdoor presentation (complete of course with his friends) showed more color and softer, lighter cottons. Get to Barney's now (or online) to see the rest of AMI for Fall.

A Series on Leather Craftsmen: Interview with Gad Tal

There is a definite resurgence in both the search for handcrafted and highly detailed goods, and the opportunity learn the trade itself. The use of locally sourced materials and locally produced products, combined with the immense skill of the craftsman has crossed multiple segments – from shoes, to neckwear, to watches and fine jewelry.

In what will be the first in a series of posts about leather craftsmen specifically, I spoke with San Francisco based artisan Gad Tal, who owns Tauro Leather. Having apprenticed with a Master Craftswoman who trained at Hermès, Tal currently focuses on made-to-order or small production pieces, doing all of the work himself. The result is not only of the highest quality, and personalized to the customer’s needs, but also holds the result of Tal’s years of experience and dedication to his craft.

Here he answers a few questions about how he got started, what his process is, and how long your custom piece may take to produce.

MR: Can you describe your background and what lead you to be interested in leather craft?

GT: I think my interest in leather craft can be attributed to growing up in a home where creativity and productivity were always encouraged. My mom was an art teacher and she gave me plenty of room to explore my creative interests, whether that involved painting murals on my bedroom walls or disassembling and reassembling household appliances. I love working with my hands and I enjoy the physical aspects as well the artistic aspects of building things. When the occasion arose to apprentice with a highly regarded leather artisan, I quickly jumped at the chance and took to the craft like a fish to water.

MR: What were some of the key learnings you received from your apprenticeship?

GT: I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to apprentice with (Hermes trained) Beatrice Amblard. During those five years, I acquired a knowledge of the coveted techniques used by the French fashion house and spent a great deal of time mastering the craft. In addition to learning the actual techniques, the greatest skills I acquired were an impeccable attention to detail and a reverence for the use of the finest materials.

MR: How would you describe your design aesthetic?

GT: I feel my design aesthetic is constantly evolving. I believe this is important in becoming a good designer. By studying the finest form of my craft, I am able to apply my technique in various manifestations and achieve beautiful results. I tend to create designs that appear simple, but upon further inspection reveal a well-thought out pattern. Many of my designs are constructed from a single piece of leather shaped and stitched to form a three dimensional object. I appreciate the challenge of creating these types of patterns. Another aspect of my designs that I enjoy is the marriage of craftsmanship, sophistication and elegance with an almost raw aesthetic. By raw, I mean to say that the origin and intrinsic beauty of the materials and craftsmanship are proudly displayed. I select leathers that I know will take on a natural patina. I hand-stitch nearly all of my work using a traditional saddle stitch. These are a few of the details that contribute to my over-all design aesthetic.

MR: Where do you source your materials from? How involved are you in processing the materials you use?

GT: In regards to leather, I purchase from local distributers who offer hides tanned in U.S. tanneries. Aside from supporting the local economy, this allows me the opportunity to hand select each individual skin for it's desired characteristics and appropriateness for it's intended use. I look for hides that will be complimentary to my designs and take on a rich patina with use. I feel the quality of the leather is parallel to to the design itself. In regards to hardware, I tend to take the minimalist route, favoring functionality over ornamentation. I often use pieces intended for equestrian use, as these are designed to last and often work well with my designs.

MR: On average, how long does a piece take to craft?

GT: A simple wallet, for example, might take a day to complete, where a bag could take as long as a week. There are many steps involved which many people may not be aware of. The leather is usually split and skived to achieve the desired thickness and reduce bulk. Edges are burnished using a hot iron and finished using a labor intensive process of repeated sanding and application of dyes and beeswax. These steps produce a smooth finish that is infused into the leather, rather than "painted" on. These are only a few of the techniques that differentiate this French method of leather working versus the typical western style. Although most people are not aware of the many steps involved, the outcome is apparent in the end product.

Bespoken for Spring '12: Things I Want

I wasn't able to attend the Bespoken show for Spring 2012, but a friend graciously shared their lookbook, which was done on newsprint. I read it on the plane last weekend and pulled out a shot of a great two-tone shirt.

Curious, I checked out the whole collection at GQ and liked what I saw. I am always a fan of two-tone pieces, seen below in both the jacket and the shirt.

I also liked the brightly printed shirt and shorts they showed, and the leather armband detail. While a little 'military', it actually reminded me of a more aggressive version of Thom Browne's dual white stripes on sleeves.

One of the first things I noticed was a group of very handsome canvas bags. Ever since the demise of my Tumi duffel I've needed a replacement, and these bags seem rugged enough for my global travels, but also smartly designed.

Since Sid launched e-commerce, I can grab this duffel (and maybe the tote as well) there... and it's definitely on my want list.

Simon Spurr's Tailored World: NYFW Review

Last season not only did I attend the Simon Spurr show, I interviewed the designer backstage beforehand. This season sadly I couldn't make it, and seeing these photos from the show (courtesy of Coute que Coute), I missed out!

From the first few looks it is evident Spurr continued his focus on great tailoring and fit. I was so into these pants with the leather boots. A little equestrian but definitely a look I would rock.

This striped shirt was great (love the sheen) but the contrasting arm bands are so fantastic!

I am not a huge fan of leather jackets but this one is amazing. Love the shoulder detail, the cross zipper, and the big collar.

Zig-zag stripe. Need I say more?

A Bright (And Tropical) Spring at Michael Bastian for Gant: NYFW Review

I've seen the future (or at least Spring '12) and it includes yellow denim and zinc oxide. For his latest collaboration with Gant, Michael Bastian took us to Hawaii, and I don't want to leave.

The whole presentation was fun and playful, and stayed so well within the Bastian aesthetic and the Gant range.

First thing I noticed when I walked in was this plaid cotton blazer paired with the over-dyed yellow jean. I loved the colored lips on the women, reminding me of applying brightly colored Zinka on the beach.

I was really drawn to this tonal seersucker blazer (I never say no to seersucker) and the printed turtle shorts.

Another super blazer (I mean, my whole closet may just become jackets), casual and light with the elbow patches to add some contrast.

Okay fine, another seersucker look... this time in both the jacket and pants. And I loved the sandals!

Pushing Boundaries at Patrik Ervell: NYFW Review

On Sunday at Milk Studios, Patrik Ervell faced a packed house... eagerly anticipating not only his Spring '12 men's collection but also his first foray into women's.

Across the board there was an influence of Hawaiian print, riding caps, fantastic duffel bags and totes, and (thankfully) an appearance by Clement Chabernaud.

While I can report that the women's range definitely fell squarely (and beautifully) into Ervell's aesthetic, what of course really kept me engaged were the men's looks.

One of my favorites was this rubberized cotton hooded raincoat in navy. The texture and sheen really stood out, and I liked the simplicity of the construction.

Ervell always does great suit. Here I liked the dark palette but with that pop of color on the tote bag (which of course I want).

This brick-red blazer in tropical wool caught my eye near the end of the show, and is definitely a piece that's on my list for Spring. 2-button, thin lapel, it's one I know will fit me perfectly.

And finally this jungle jacket in twill, with a hand-braided horsehair belt. I mean... how could you not get excited for this?

Ervell is a master at playing within his key design elements but really pushing the boundaries in texture and technique, and he did it again here. A stellar showing and I can't wait to shop this at Opening Ceremony come Spring!

Super Chic Super Mart from Marlon Gobel for Spring '12: NYFW Review

I've been following Marlon Gobel's work since he first launched his eponymous collection. I always enjoy the consistent themes each season, the the complete attention to detail, and the introduction of color and boldness to the men's shows.

For Spring '12 Gobel decided to explore the theme of Super Mart, that place where the beauty is in the symmetry and repetition of color in product merchandising.

With a backdrop of Lay's products (how fitting), we saw a tightly done collection that brought out fruit prints (can only Stella McCartney play with produce?) that caught your eye and held it.

Suiting done with the usual Gobel attention to detail and fit. The models were outfitted with brightly soled derbys from heritage brand Walk Over (seen here in white).

Really loved this sheer shirt (Gobel definitely dabbled in mesh this season, as did Robert Geller and Simon Spurr), and digging the hexagonal stitching, a subtle nod to his branding.

Closing the show, in what has to be my favorite piece... a madras tuxedo. I am so into this, cannot wait for the Spring delivery! Oh and yes, the model is wearing ostrich loafers with a black grosgrain bow.

Navajo Tie by David Hart: Things I Have

In case you somehow missed my interview with neckwear designer David Hart, I've been talking about him for a while now. Known for high quality and well designed ties, made in Brooklyn, he has been getting a lot of coverage as of late.

When I interviewed him he shared some "sneak peek" photos of the fabric he was using for his upcoming Navajo ties. I quickly (and understandably) became obsessed with the ties and have had them on my "want" list all summer.

Today I was browsing Bergdorf's and found two styles from the Navajo collection. And of course I had to get one!

Such a fantastic mix of colors and I love the pattern. Cannot wait to wear it this week!

During Fashion's Night Out this week I had the privilege of accompanying designer Marlon Gobel to an event he participated in at Bergdorf's Men's shop.

While it was so fantastic to be at Bergdorf's and see Whoopi Goldberg, Alexander Olch, Phillip Crangi, Euan Rellie... the most spectacular part of the evening was when Marlon gifted me a bowtie to wear.

I love it! Using the hexagonal shape that is his main branding element, I loved the contrast of colors, and the cut on the ends. When tied it gave a really unique look!

Loafers from Billy Reid: Things I Have

I am always on the lookout for new shoes... and in the back of mind know that someday my beloved Gucci loafers will have their final days.

So when Billy Reid tweeted that there was a huge sale on their website, I quickly went over and took a look.

Found these loafers, which I thought were great for the dual texture -- a suede-like tongue, and the wingtip toe. While I think they're better suited to Spring, I want to get some use of them as we leave Summer and go into Fall.

Great addition to my closet and excited to wear 'em out!

Coat from Taishi Nobukuni: Things I Want

On one hand I am preparing for my first NYC winter and want a warm coat. On the other, I can never get myself to move away from really wild and eye-catching prints... merge these two and you get this amazing piece from Japanese designer Taishi Nobukuni.

Besides the great print (the red/white/blue makes me think of a psychedelic Thom Browne), I liked the double breast and the large collar.

Could definitely see myself wrapped up & warm in this when the snow hits!

Perusing through Park & Bond tonight and came across a great fall look... all by Michael Bastian for Gant (quelle surprise!).

I'm hooked on getting a navy double-breasted blazer for Fall, and I love this one, in moleskine. Makes it just casual enough to pair with the camo pants (which I also love).

To be honest, I'm never one of those "shop the look" guys... I prefer to buy pieces and put them together myself. But whoever did this one (Mr. Wooster perhaps?) rocked it out!

Quilted Tote Bag from Bonfanti: Things I Want

The bag addict in me perked up when I saw this quilted tote bag from Italian brand Bonfanti.

I was just talking about how I needed to transition into a new bag for Winter, one with a different color and texture, and I think this could do it. I like the puffiness of the quilt, the gray with the black leather accents and handles.

I guess it's a shawl collar cardigan kind of week... recently posted about a great Thom Browne sweater, and then came across this cable knit from S.N.S Herning.

Of course it's navy, my go-to color, and I am such a shawl collar fan. This sweater is hand signed by the person who knitted it -- not just a fun addition, but something that goes towards the quality and craftmanship of the brand.

Shawl Collar Cardigan from Thom Browne: Things I Want

My fixation on Thom Browne continues, with this marled shawl collar cardigan for Fall. Spotted this piece at Odin a couple of weekends ago and thought it was great.

Of course with the usual TB elements -- the red/white/blue stripe around the collar and wrist, and the white armbands. The flecks in the gray add some nice dimension and texture to the sweater, and I could easily see pairing it with one of my Thom Browne oxfords.

Handmade Gingham Bow Tie: Things I Have

Last month I had a long overdue catch up with my Aunt Diane and was telling her about my growing bowtie collection. My aunt is crafty, creative, and very good with a sewing machine... she asked, if she made me a bowtie, what would I want.

Well... a few weeks later the result arrived! A brown gingham for Fall! I am so excited, it is exactly what I wanted + I can't wait for the weather to change so I can wear it... I think it'll be perfect with my new Gant Rugger tweed blazer.

W.R.K Fall Collection: Things I Love

Today I came across the Fall 2011 collection for NY based W.R.K (standing for work, rest, karma). Designed by Matteo Gottardi, I have to say I was really blown away by this menswear line.

Fall had some great fabrics, textures, and colors... and some of my favorites included the shawl collar cardigan, the nubby "Spectator blazer", and the paneled two-tone jacket.

Wallet from Commes des Garcons: Things I Want

Back in March I bought a Commes des Garcons leather pouch, as my carry-all for flying. It holds my passport, iPod, breath mints.... everything I need in-flight!

Now of course, I want the wallet to match. My current CdG wallet (in tartan) has started to fall apart from overuse, and so I want to grab the fantastic brown embossed version!

Everytime I am in Opening Ceremony I check for it, but it is nowhere to be found. And even on their website it is on backorder. Boo!

So I will sit and wait. Patiently. Sort of.

Denim from J Brand: Things I Have

My denim affections have fluctuated over the years. At one point I solely wore Diesel. Then more recently I was all about Uniqlo. However I've started to realize that 100% loyalty may not get me the best pair of jeans.

Months ago I heard colleagues talking about J Brand, a label founded in 2004 and based in sunny Southern California. While starting out with women's, they've been jumping into men's -- and recently I noticed their version of a slim cargo featured in GQ.

So when I was asked if I wanted to try a pair, I jumped at the chance. And I have to say the Kane fit, in Raw, is a great addition to my denim collection. I love how the waist sits, I like that they're a little long so I can easily cuff and roll, and the wash is fantastic.

Julius Boot from Peter Nappi: Things I Want

There is a lot of discussion in menswear about local production and about craftmanship, and so when I was recently pointed in the direction of Peter Nappi leathergoods, I was definitely blown away.

Working in a studio in Nashville, the current iteration of the brand was launched by Phillip, the grandson of Peter Nappi, who had been a shoemaker himself.

When I first started looking at both the boots and bags on offer, it was truly breathtaking to even visually see the level of quality and craftmanship. And I was immediately drawn to the Julius boot.

The construction of the Julius was a big sell -- I liked the long toe, the subtle seam between the upper and the sole, and the height of the boot. This style comes in three colors, and my preference is for the Bitter Chocolate.

Until I get to Nashville myself to see the goods in person, I'll just keep drooling over the photos, and keeping these boots high on my Things I Want list. And until you get there too, I highly recommend checking out the full website: Peter Nappi.

Cricket Sweater from Gant Rugger: Things I Have

In another (pleasant) occurrence of turning something I "Want" into something I "Have"... this is was the second item I picked up at the Gant Rugger store over the weekend.

I'd written about the Cricket Sweater last month, and then had seen it in the window at Urban Outfitters the past two weeks, every morning on my way to the gym. It proved too much temptation to withstand.

I'm so excited for some Fall weather, so I can put this on for work, or out on the weekends... it reminds me of varsity sweaters I used to wear in high school, but the weave is so much lighter (and updated).

Timex Weekender Watch: Things I Have

For the past two years my go-to casual watch was a bright yellow Nixon. I loved it + got a lot of compliments... but it was starting to feel stale and I needed a change!

So the last time I wore the Nixon, someone complimented me on it and I gifted it to them. Which meant I needed a new watch! Timex has been doing some really fun stuff (starting with their inclusion at J Crew stores) and the price point is definitely right.

The Weekender was featured on Por Homme (a favorite site of mine) and I snatched one up.

When I went to the Timex site, they were offering 20% off... hurry up!

Tweed Jacket from Gant Rugger: Things I Have

Even though it is the middle of summer, I cannot get my mind off of Fall! I am itching to wear sweaters, cords, and jackets. So today I had a bit of a spree on Bleecker Street and started my Fall wardrobe off right! Black Fleece, Gant Rugger, Tommy Hilfiger....

I walked into the Gant Rugger store and immediately saw this tweed jacket. Tried it on + thirty seconds later handed it to the salesperson to take it home! It's amazing -- I love the fit, the tweed isn't too heavy, and it has nice (and expected from Gant) detailing.

Cannot wait to get some wear out of this come chillier weather!

Elle Canada Floral Fantasy Editorial: Things I Love

So I know it's not revolutionary, the whole floral-on-floral thing. In fact I was just going through photos recently that I'd taken at Art Basel, and there was also a series of paintings done in a similar way.

But... I still love it. And here I love the purple hues, and how the model's features really contrast with the background and the fashion (and she reminds me of Florence Welch).

Done for Elle Canada's September 2011 issue, the editorial is titled Floral Fantasy.

McNairy Longwings for Engineered Garments: Things I Want

I'll be the first to admit that I have fallen onto the Mark McNairy bandwagon, head over heels. Everything he's been doing lately has been incredible. Still kicking myself that I didn't pick up the two-tone derby I tried on in Hong Kong.

Well, it is no surprise that I would love these longwings he did for Engineered Garments.

The deep rich color caught my eye, as well as the classic detailing. These shoes are definitely added to my top 10 for Fall '11.

And what I didn't notice at first (until Selectism pointed it out), is that the left and right shoe are slightly different. It took me a minute to find what that difference once, but it is subtle enough that you'll be the only one who knows.

D-Ring Coral Belt from Sid Mashburn: Things I Have

Well it's always great when there is something I've written about wanting, and then I actually get it! As was the case this week, with this fantastic D-ring belt from Sid Mashburn.

I received it as a very generous + thoughtful gift, and am excited for my first opportunity to wear it! I think it'll go great with my white linen shorts from Trina Turk... the belt has really great colors (I'm a big coral fan) and it's a perfect weight for summer.

Back on the Sid Mashburn site I found this really cool oyster shell belt buckle, but that may be a bit harder to dress with. Check out Sid + Ann's sites for a lot of great wares!

Navy + Striped Bowtie: Things I Have

The nice thing about writing about my interest (putting it lightly) in bowties is that I get gifted some really great ones! Today I arrived home to a FedEx package from my youngest brother, with a really awesome striped tie.

As previously mentioned I love navy, and I really dig the colored stripes... it's adds some color and fun, and always keeps the tie versatile when pairing to an outfit.

Will definitely be getting some wear out of this one! Stay tuned for pics...

Striped Bowtie from Brooks Brothers: Things I Have

It was this blogger's birthday over the weekend + I was thrilled to receive another bowtie to add to my repertoire!

From my friend Richard, this navy with stripes from Brooks Brothers, which I love. I'm a huge fan of anything navy but also like the flat ends to the tie, which will give it a great slim shape when I have it on.

Moscot x Blk Dnm Sunnies: Things I Have

I've been on a hunt recently for some new sunnies... I love my current pair but have had them for a while, and wanted something fresh.

So last weekend I was walking in SoHo and stopped into the Blk Dnm store (the recent line from Johan Lindeberg), having read about their new collab with Moscot.

There are three styles (named 1, 2, and 3) and after trying them all on I went with #1. Loved the brown tint on the lens and the rounded shape of the frame.

And here there are next to me in the taxi on the way home!

Last week everyone was talking about the Sid Mashburn online store launch, but it was the folks at Kempt that zeroed me in on some really bright + vibrant d-ring belts.

I was really into the Coral Provencal design (maybe it's the Francophile in me) -- great late Summer color and a perfect pairing with my new white linen shorts.

Hightops from Jimmy Choo: Things I Want

Any follower of this blog knows I am a fan of hightops, and very smitten with the whole designer hightop phenom. Pierre Hardy, Lanvin, Louboutin... everyone is getting into it + I think it's great. So I was very happy to hear that Jimmy Choo was launching a men's range, and it would include the aforementioned category.

I really like the dress shoes in the inaugural Choo men's collection, but was really drawn to the Belgravia. Nice contrasting of materials, liked the stripe across the side, and it's made with a wool cashmere flannel. Oh and lined in shearling. These babies are soft!

Right now these are just available on pre-order from the Jimmy Choo site, but I am definitely considering adding my name to the list!

Coat from Black Fleece: Things I Want

Brooks Brothers released some images of the Black Fleece collection for Fall and (shocker!) I like a lot of it. The collab with BB is where Thom Browne presents a more commercial version of his (IMHO amazing) vision.

I was really drawn to this navy coat with the gold buttons. It looks very tailored and cropped (a la Thom Browne). I also love the large front pockets and the belt. This is a great piece for Fall -- it's basic enough to wear for a few seasons, but with enough design + detail to keep it interesting.

Jumping Models Video for Kult Magazine: Things I Love

I always enjoy a good video as an avenue for showcasing menswear -- whether it be quirky like Kitsune or something a little more artistic.

German magazine Kult just created one that I kind of love... they pulled together a bunch of my favorite models (hello Evandro + Cory Bond) and have them jumping around, with great editing and a groovin' soundtrack.

Like the recent Resort video Prabal Gurung did with Rye Rye, these shorts can provide a great perspective into a brand or provide a new outlet to showcase apparel.

Giambattista Valli Couture Fall '11: Things I Love

With the Fall '11 Couture shows in Paris this past week, there have been some amazing works shown... I really enjoyed Riccardo Tisci's progression at Givenchy and the whimsy of Alexis Mabille.

But some of my favorite pieces were from Giambattista Valli. There was such exquisite detail, vibrant color, and a beautiful femininity.

Gant Rugger V-Neck: Things I Want

Over the weekend I did a little browsing on Bleecker (or as a friend put it, "market research"). And of course I stopped in to the Gant Rugger store. I wanted to see if they had the blue wool pants from Fall '11 that Barney's was out of. Well, the Bleecker store hadn't received Fall yet, only pre-Fall (but the new Prince Street Rugger store apparently has Fall).

And that's where we come to the great sweater I want... part of pre-Fall, I loved the red and blue stripes around the neck and the wrists. I also really liked the waffle knit that keeps the piece light and wearable.

Named "It's All Cricket" this is a great late Summer/early Fall add to my wardrobe.

Green Cotton Pants from Unis: Things I Want

I stopped into Unis today, a favorite label of mine, but also a store that does a great job of presenting their wares (and a nice mixture of other's as well!).

There was a really great summer feel in the shop -- Nantucket rope bracelets, anchor printed scarves, and some scuba finds in the window. And of course, Unis' famous cotton pants in a range of bright colors.

I really liked the Grass Green, not so in your face that people get scared, but definitely something that stands out. And of course they fit like a dream...
